Maharashtra is home to some of India's most revered pilgrimage sites, and three of them -- Pandharpur (Vitthal-Rukmini Temple), Akkalkot (Swami Samarth Maharaj Mandir), and Tuljapur (Tulja Bhavani Temple) -- are conveniently located in and around Solapur district. Many devotees combine these three into a single 3-day pilgrimage circuit, often adding a 4th stop at Gangapur (Datta Mandir)for the complete Datta sampradaya experience. This guide gives you a complete day-by-day itinerary, distances, routes, and practical tips.

Tip: visualise the entire circuit on our interactive Akkalkot map view. Turn on Pilgrimage Mode to see Akkalkot, Pandharpur, Tuljapur, and Ganagapur connected as one driving route, with live distances and travel times.

    Quick Circuit Overview

    • Total duration: 3 days, 2 nights (or 4 days, 3 nights with Gangapur)
    • Total distance: ~280-350 km (excluding return to home city)
    • Base city: Solapur (most convenient hub for all three temples)
    • Best mode of transport: Car / cab (allows flexibility between stops)
    • Best time to do this circuit: October to February (cool weather)

    The Three Temples

    Pandharpur - Vitthal Rukmini Temple

Located on the banks of the Chandrabhaga river, Pandharpur is home to the iconic Vitthal-Rukmini Temple. It is the spiritual heart of the Warkari movement and one of the most important Vaishnava pilgrimage sites in Maharashtra. Lakhs of devotees walk to Pandharpur every year during Ashadi Ekadashi and Kartiki Ekadashi.

Akkalkot - Swami Samarth Maharaj Mandir

The samadhi mandir of Shree Swami Samarth Maharaj, considered the fourth incarnation of Lord Dattatreya. He arrived at Akkalkot in 1856 and lived for 22 years at the residence of his disciple Cholappa, where his shrine now stands. Akkalkot draws devotees year-round but especially on Gurupurnima, Datta Jayanti, and Punyatithi.

    Tuljapur - Tulja Bhavani Temple

One of the 51 Shakti Peethas of India and the family deity (kuladevi) of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Tulja Bhavani is the embodiment of feminine divine power. The temple draws millions of devotees every year, especially during Navratri.

Gangapur - Dattatreya Temple (Optional 4th Stop)

Associated with Shri Narasimha Saraswati, an important Datta tradition saint and considered a previous incarnation of Swami Samarth. Located on the banks of the Bhima river, with a sacred sangam (confluence) where pilgrims take a holy dip.

    • Total per person (family of 4): ₹4,500 - ₹6,500 (excluding train fare to Solapur)

    Tips for the Circuit Trip

    1. Hire a single cab for the whole circuit. It's cheaper than taking local cabs at each stop, and the same driver will know the routes and timings.
    2. Stay in Akkalkot the first night, Pandharpur the second. Tuljapur accommodation is more limited; visit it as a day stop instead of overnight.
    3. Carry small change. Each temple has donation boxes, prasad shops, and parking fees that prefer cash.
    4. Pack a bag of pooja items -- coconuts, flowers, agarbatti -- to use across all four temples instead of buying at each one.
    5. Wear comfortable footwear. You'll be doing a lot of walking and removing/wearing shoes at each temple.
    6. Plan around aarti timings -- each temple has specific morning and evening aartis worth attending, not just generic darshan slots.
    7. Avoid weekends if possible. Weekday circuits are 30-50% less crowded at all 3 temples.
    8. Carry medication, sunscreen, and water -- the long drives and waiting in queues are tiring.

Add Gangapur for the Complete Datta Sampradaya Experience

If you have an extra day, add Gangapur to your itinerary. Gangapur is where Shri Narasimha Saraswati lived, and visiting both Gangapur and Akkalkot completes the Datta sampradaya pilgrimage -- since Swami Samarth Maharaj is considered the reincarnation of Narasimha Saraswati in the Datta tradition.

Recommended order: Gangapur → Akkalkot → Pandharpur → Tuljapur. Add one day to your itinerary for Gangapur (Day 0 or insert as Day 1.5).
